Why Pre-Production Is the Most Important Part of Your Video

Pre-production is everything that happens before the camera rolls. It's the least glamorous phase and the easiest one to rush. It's also where most video projects are won or lost.

What happens in pre-production

  • Creative brief: the goal, the audience, the main message and where the video will be shown
  • Script or interview outline: what gets said, and by whom
  • Shot list or storyboard: every image we need to tell the story
  • Locations: scouting, permissions and permits
  • People: choosing staff to feature or casting talent
  • Logistics: schedule, crew, gear, releases and a call sheet

What skipping it costs

Without a plan, shoots run long, key shots get missed, and the edit turns into a rescue mission. A shot nobody remembered to get means booking another shoot day. A message nobody agreed on means round after round of revisions. Problems that take ten minutes to solve on paper cost hours, or days, once the crew has packed up.

How we approach it

Every Golden Age Films project starts with a discovery call where we listen to your ideas, challenges and goals. From there we turn that conversation into a written plan: an outline or script, a shot list and a schedule that you sign off on before we film. By the time we arrive on set, everyone knows what we're making and why, which leaves room to catch the unplanned moments that make a video feel alive.

Five questions to answer before any shoot

  • What's the one thing a viewer should remember?
  • Who's watching, and where will they watch it?
  • What should they do after it ends?
  • Who needs to approve the final video?
  • What's the deadline, and what's it tied to?

If you can answer those, you're already ahead of most projects. If you can't yet, that's exactly what a discovery call is for. And if you're getting ready for a shoot, our shoot prep checklist covers the practical side.

Book a discovery call and tell us what you have in mind. We'll come back with a plan that fits.
